Spring Program 2018

On behalf of the 7×24 Exchange Rocky Mountain Chapter we invite you to attend our next program at the NOAA National Hurricane Prediction Center, which is managed by our very own Board Member, Scott Nahm

We will have two special guests from the International 7x24Exchange: Bob Cassiliano, Chairman and CEO of 7×24 Exchange International, and Michael Siteman, Director – Chapter Representative 7×24 Exchange International. Bob will talk about the upcoming Program ‘The Data Center of Tomorrow’ June 3-6 in Orlando FL. He will also discuss the STEM – Science – Technology – Engineering – Mathematics, which is an outreach program to introduce students to careers in Data Center Management and Engineering. Bob’s goal is to create awareness to not only students, but in the educational institutions as well. We are featuring as our Keynote Speaker, David Gallaher. David will share with us photos from a trip in which he accompanied NASA scientists to Antarctica, where they gathered data on ice shelf reductions due to suspected Climate Change.  He will relate this to our quest for ever better Data Center Efficiency. He runs the National Snow and Ice Data Center. David is quite the storyteller, and oh BTW, he runs a data center too!  Here is a link to his bio:

The NOAA data center features The Earth System Research Laboratory – Global Systems Division houses 5 supercomputers collectively known as “Jet”. These systems contain over 45,000 cores of compute power primarily focused on the Hurricane Forecast Improvement Project (HFIP). The HFIP project provides the coordination to improve guidance for hurricane track, intensity and storm surge forecasts.

Science On a Sphere® (SOS) is a room sized, global display system that uses computers and video projectors to display planetary data onto a six foot diameter sphere, analogous to a giant animated globe. Researchers at NOAA developed Science On a Sphere® as an educational tool to help illustrate Earth System science to people of all ages. Animated images of atmospheric storms, climate change, and ocean temperature can be shown on the sphere, which is used to explain what are sometimes complex environmental processes, in a way that is simultaneously intuitive and captivating.

Scott Nahman will also launch our 2018 Scholarship and Internship Programs, a Committee which he Chairs, and will also introduce us to his Data Center. We’ll enjoy a tour of the Earth System Research Laboratory.

David Gallaher, is the I.T. Services Manager for the National Snow and Ice Data Center, and has worked with NASA on several projects.  He will take us with him on his 2016 journey to Antarctica, where his team performed climatology research and took measurements of ice thickness.  David will present this in a fact-based manner, and will relate this to energy consumption of Data Centers.  He’s been presenting on climatology since 2003, and is quite the story-teller.  Oh and by the way, he runs an extremely energy efficient Data Center too, with PUEs around 1.0x.  More about David at https://nsidc.org/about/bios/gallaher.html
